Oracle EBS R12 Terminology

Key Terminologies in Oracle EBS R12

Understanding the essential terms used in Oracle project lifecycles.

In the world of Oracle E-Business Suite, certain terms define the entire lifecycle of a project. Understanding the difference between Implementation, Rollout, Migration, and Support is crucial for any functional or technical consultant. This guide breaks down these frequently used terminologies.

Implementation

A fresh, first-time installation and configuration of an Oracle application. This involves mapping business processes to the system, configuring modules, and loading initial data.

Upgradation

The process of moving from a lower version of Oracle Apps to a higher version (e.g., from R12.1.3 to R12.2.10). This is done to leverage new features, get better support, and improve performance.

Migration

The process of moving specific data, configurations (setups), or custom code from one Oracle instance to another. This is often done to keep development, testing, and production environments in sync.

Reimplementation

A complete do-over of an existing implementation. This happens when the initial setup no longer fits the business needs, and it's better to start fresh with a new design rather than patch the old one.

Rollout

Expanding an existing Oracle Apps solution to a new part of the business, such as a new country, a new branch, or a different operating unit. The core design is copied and then adapted for local needs.

Support

The day-to-day maintenance and troubleshooting of a live Oracle Application environment after it has gone live. This includes resolving user issues, applying patches, and ensuring the system runs smoothly.
